Organ Transplant Surgery

Organ transplantation is the established treatment for the failure of vital organs such as the kidneys, pancreas, liver, heart or lung. It is basically the moving of an organ from one body to another, or from a donor site on the patient's own body, for the purpose of replacing the recipient's damaged or absent organ.

Transplants that are performed between two subjects of the same species are called allografts. Allografts can either be from a living or cadaveric source. Organ donors may be living, or brain dead. Worldwide, the kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organs. Today, most organ transplants are relatively safe, routine procedures, and transplantation is considered to be the best treatment option for thousands of patients every year. Kidneys and livers may be transplanted from a living donor, since people are born with an extra kidney and the liver is regenerative.
